Their arrangements were easily made. The innkeeper was sorry to see them go, but the information that they were going to stay at Pemberley earned his obvious respect. Their bags were taken downstairs promptly, and they were attended to the carriage with all the consideration that would usually be given to guests of much higher standing. Elizabeth had seen just such behaviour at another of the inns on their journey. The arrival of a countess had brought a great number of the staff rushing to her assistance.

This is how I would be treated if I married Mr. Darcy, she thought. Then it occurred to her that this was the first time she had mulled over that possibility as something which could actually happen. At Pemberley, she had given thought to similar words, ‘if I had married him,’ but in that instance, she had still been considering it as something which could never happen.

In this moment she realized that she was seriously contemplating the prospect of a union between them. It was not a decision which could be made until she was completely certain of her feelings, but here was more evidence that they were evolving in a romantic direction. This had been the most remarkable day.

It was interesting to take the same road again, to turn in at the lodge as they had done this morning, and to take the road through the woods, having knowledge of its twists and turns and what scenery was ahead. When they reached the top of the hill, there was the valley laid out before them, the same, and yet altered. On their first arrival, the sun had been in the east, bathing the landscape with a mid-morning glow. Now it was in the west, casting its light and its shadows in the opposite direction, and giving the scene a different appearance.

It occurred to her that all of this might one day be intimately familiar, regardless of the direction from which the light was cast, or the point from which it was viewed. For the moment, it was remarkable enough to be seeing this view for the second time in one day.

“Who would have thought that we would be back here again so soon,” Mr. Gardiner said, echoing her thought.

As they descended the hill, she wondered if Mr. Darcy might be at one of the front windows watching out for them. That question was answered by his appearance on the doorstep before they had even crossed the bridge over the stream.

He came forward the moment the carriage stopped, and there was the broadest smile on his face. It was clear that he was made very happy by their arrival. By her own arrival in particular, Elizabeth acknowledged to herself, feeling gratified by the understanding that she held such a place in his heart.

Once they were inside, Mrs. Reynolds warmly welcomed them back and showed them to their rooms. All three bedchambers were enormous and contained large, high-canopied beds with rich satin hangings in warm colours.
